Londa's Comments on THREADS Magaizne #157

I LOVE THREADS Magazine!  I hoard it when it comes - keeping it 'saved' for 'me time'.  This week, I finally stole some time to thoroughly digest this most recent issue - November 2011.
WHY do magazines dated November arrive in August?????

Anyway - here I go, straight through from beginning to end - just MY thoughts, my experience, my opinions for what it's worth.

page 15.  Well - I just ordered myself Couture Sewing Techniques - and put it up on my website for sale.If you click on the link above, for a limited time, you'll save 15%!!!
Claire Schaeffer was the last celebrity I had at my retail sewing store in 2003 - so she is extra special to me.  She is a dynamo little lady who really knows her stuff!  An investment in this book would be a treat to yourself for many pleasant 'vicarious' sewing hours, as well as a great resource for techniques for years to come.

page 23.  Shirred Velvet jacket - beautiful!!!!  However, I think it would be even prettier if it had been created with 3 sections of  tucks rather than 4 sections. If I were to do it, I'd certainly use a very strong 100% polyester thread so that it wouldn't break when pulling up to gather.   Honestly, as beautiful as it is, having sewn on velvet more than enough in my 45+ years of sewing, I really don't think this project will go on my 'to do' list.  Sure fun reading and admiring it though.

page 31.  Personally, I don't care for the sleeves on Marfy blouse 2314.  Guess I'm old enough to remember the leg-o-mutton silhouette on sleeves and I just don't want to 'go there' again.  Pretty colors though.  But heh - don't think I'd carry that brown purse with this ensemble!

page 32. New Look 6028.  My French Loop or Italian Trim would either look beautiful on this Chanel style jacket.
Vogue 1220 - I just went to look up more about it at Vogue Pattern.com  and decided quickly that IF I needed a 'business' dress, the lines on this one are very interesting, but that I CERTAINLY would NOT make that wide belt - much less tie it in a bow on my tummy!   I think a self-fabric or skinny leather or metal belt at the natural waist would 'fit' much better with the tailored look of this dress.

page 33.  Colette Beignet 1005 - a new pattern line for me- I'd never heard of it anyway.  I like the skirt, but have NEVER liked a buttonhole that close to the hemline  I'd quickly eliminate that lowermost buttonhole and button.

Butterick 5575  looked intriguing, so I looked it up online.  As made up with the black ides and print center fronts and back, I do NOT like it.  My opinion is that it looks clowny.  Just mu humble opinion.  I also don't understand why put a tapered let on the women's size pant.  My feeling is that pegged pants make the hips look larger.  I prefer to balance a wide hip with a boot leg silhouette.

The Cover Stitch - pages 34-39.  Pam Leggett obviously knows her topic, and this is a great article if you're trying to decide if you need this feature in your sewing equipment.  Honestly, I have it on my Elna 744 serger and have NEVER used it!  Give me my twin needles and fusible stay tape - and I'm set to go.  Wanna race?  I can guarantee you it wouldn't take me 10 minutes to 'set the machine'. I know many have the cover stitch and love it - that's great.  Just not me, thanks.
#6 - page 37 - I would bury the threads rather than knotting and sealing.

#7 - page 37 - I would certainly use an applique scissors to trim - they help alot but do not INSURE that you don't nick through the outside of the garment.
page 38 - I LOVE that bias trim on the skirt!   The hints in the Basic Guidelines for Cover Stitching are all VERY important.  -especially starting with the needles in the fabric.  THAT I remember well from selling sergers with the cover hem.

page 39.  The scarf looks quite bulky to me.  If I did this technique, it would have to be on something very very lightweight and drapey...ala silk charmeuse.

page 40-47  Season Fashion Forecast
In a nutshell:
1. Think 'outfits' - 'ensembles'
2. hip emphasis (be careful here if you're hippy in the first place - for example, SKIP those fur cuffs as on page 41 photo at the top!)  So perhaps REAL defined waists are back as in the diagram ono page 41!?!  THAT will be hard to teach any 30 and under gal - WHERE her waist is!!!
3.  Shoulder emphasis - YEA - shoulder pads are back - jut natural - not huge.  IMHO if you have slanted shoulder, shoulder pads should ALWAYS be 'in'!
4.  Higher necklines - YEA - tell the female newscasters that 'decollette' -revealing tops and dresses are OUT and in bad taste, would ya PLEASE?!

5.  Jacket - wide lapels or NO lapels.  Then why didn't they sketch a wider lapel on the diagram??
6.  page 42 - I don't see how a 'slouchy pocket' can be slimming on anyone.....
7.  page 43 - LOVE that asymmetric burgundy sketched top!  I'm ready to LEAP into embellishment options for T's and TOPS after my fall show circuit - STAY TUNED!!!  I can't sleep for all the ideas I have, and my 'box' of design stuff in my studio is overflowing.....
So - that grey slouchy look at the top left is 'feminine' looking?  That's a new definition of 'feminine look to me - I call that 'sloppy'!
That orchid blouse with the full bishop sleeves, gathered shoulder and tie neckline looks like straight out of the 70's...I made MANY of these for myself and dress-making clients.  A very 'lady' look!
8.  Love all the textures - ala pages 44-45.  However, that Oscar de la Renta combo is a bit much for me...I'd skip all that jewelry - the top and skirt 'talk' enough, thank you.  AND - I do NOTget that green top underneath - and those too long slouchy sleeves sticking out - but heh, what do I know?!?/?
9.  page 46 - Black is NEVER gone - so how can it be 'back'???  Again - love the textures.  10.  Color palette - KNOW your colors!  Yellows are HARD to wear well.  KNOW your best pink and red - is it 'cool' - mauve-y, 'berry'  or 'warm - 'tomato-y'???  Better find out!

page 48.  Hand-Embroidered Understitching   - in my DREAMS I'd have time to do this - but if I had the time- Yea, I could enjoy it!

pages 52-55 Love that Bias Half Lining.  The old tailoring and dressmaking techniques are always worth a second look.  THANKS for this, THREADS and Louise Cutting!

pages 56-61.  I LOVE this all -lace red dress.  THIS may be my direction for New Year's Eve Ballroom Dancing gown this year!  I used many of these techniques with lace on my daughter's wedding dress(es!)

page 62-65.  INGENIOUS!!!!  WHY didn't I think of that??????????????  Very smart construction order - VERYsmart!   Way to go, Susan Pottage!

page 66-73 - interesting reading.  LOTS of effort for entertainment in my book.

page 73 - COATS  I looked up each of the patterns in the 'try thee Patterns' box...
Butterick 5297 - seems to be a VERY good basic, but UNLINED- which, in most cases, I would prefer lined personally
Classics 104 - Cecelia Podolak - seems she is designing for the larger woman - and pattern sizing reflects that.  Basics.
Elements 013 - Linda Kubik - LOVE the collar on 013.  009 with yoke and slot buttonhole in front yoke seam is also TRULY wonderful.  On my 'list' for when I need a new coat - either of these.
McCalls 4975 - basic, raglan sleeve nothing special imho
McCall's 9576 - basic, shawl collar, set-in sleeve, nothing special imho
Vogue 1145 - that's a BIG collar - too big unless you're at least 5'9'' or more! imho...
Vogue 8695 - cut-on Kimono sleeves - more of a 'jacket' than a coat I think, or a very lightweight coat.
Vogue 8539 - nice - fits that 'cocoon wrap styling from the style forecast article - but beware of the collar depth - if you don't have a long neck, you probably will want to decrease the depth of the collar or you'll feel strangled.
page 74 - Preshrinking wool technique - never heard of turning off steam and re-pressing with a dry iron.  Sounds like it makes sense.  Always learning - always!

I'll never forget making a wool melton coat.  Melton is HEAVY.  I did a fantastic job, but then my machine could NOT make buttonholes!  I took it all over town looking for a tailor to make hand-worked or good machine buttonholes.  I honestly don't remember the end of the story - but it mustn't have been positive, because I don't remember wearing that coat!  lesson - if you are going to make a coat of HEAVY fabric - and your pattern requires a buttonhole, buy an eighth of a yard and play with buttonhole solutions FIRST! ;)

page 75 - Shows use of the duckbill applique scissors very well - middle right hand side.  I LOVE mine - and think every seamstress needs one.  HERE is a link to buy the applique scissors at my site.

page 76 - It's Sew Easy new PBS series!  Little ole' me was on the 2nd program of this first series.  Read about my experience taping HERE.

Agree COMPLETELY with the Style Tips for length of skirts, and proportions with the longer skirts.  And I'd just decided to shorten some of my skirt - guess NOT!

page 77 - 'Measure of a Man" trivia - very interesting! Love things like this...tidbits of trivia along sewing lines!

page 78 - a Good Color Forecast - a good visual summary.  Now choose what is good for YOU.

So - here is the 'studio. A bit intimidating? Well - all depends on your experience I suppose. It was a bit to me, that's for sure - as I'd only done this one other time - for Nowsewing.net a Pfaff series which is not available any longer.

A quick plane trip to Cleveland the beginning of March took me there - after weeks of thinking/writing/ rehearsing in my brain...and convincing myself that it wouldn't be any different from teaching a class like I love to do at the expos.

Those sentiments began to fall apart when I realized that I'd forgotten to pack my favorite and MOST IMPORTANT Fabric Chenille Brush to show the last step of ruffing up my 'Fabric Fur'!!!!! Thankfully, the guys in the studio came up with a stiff wire brush from their tool box! When you see my spot - you'll notice I have my big hand almost completely covering that precious brush!!!

Being female - I was VERY happy to learn that my makeup would be done by a professional. Being over 55 - I have to admit I forget this lovely, talented artist's name...but she was beautiful and put me totally at ease. Here's her doing her magic on me.

It was fun to meet/share the experience/give each other encouragement that day. Tricial Wadell, Bobbie Bullard, Eileen Roche, Trish Preston, Katrina Loving - and very memorably, 'SUEDE' from Project Runway were all taping the day I shot my spot.

It was very interesting to hear Suede's story about the development of his career as designer, and also to hear all the 'ins and outs' of his contracting with Simplicity for his patterns.

I suppose you've heard of 'Green Rooms' for TV guests? Well - I have no idea why - or even IF 'green rooms' are really green - but at this studio - it sure was!

And what a creative mess it was.... here's a peak.
Sew... that's the story. We were encouraged to wait until now to share about the series - but since the release is upon us - now you need to help! The more stations we can get this series on - the more people will see it - and the more people will join with us in enjoying the many benefits of sewing!

Tribute to a Great Big Brother...now with Jesus

My big brother is with Jesus. It happened pretty suddenly - the illness - but I was so fortunate to have been able to get there on Monday before he passed to Jesus' arms. I even got to apologize - once again, for stabbing him with knitting needles when I was about 10! He was not quite 63 and had just retired. Lessons to learn? Just what he said not long before on one of our last times together after his first round in the hospital..."I've learned not to put things off - to go ahead and live and do the things I dreamed about NOW".

This week I've been so comforted as I Re-read about what the 'Present Heaven' is like now for my brother - the Word of God made clearer with insight from Randy Alcorn in HEAVEN. And just this morning - reading a new book, Heaven is Real: Lessons on Earthly Joy by Don Piper who wrote 90 Minutes in Heaven. He quotes an anonymous saying: "When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, you will rejoice and the world will cry." That will certainly be true of my big brother, Roger Luer. He was a wonderful photographer! . Enjoy his work that so celebrates life and this beautiful world at his site here where you can even order photos. I will be SO proud of him and the life he lived as we celebrate his life Friday and Saturday.

God is answering prayers already...Mommy (with Alzheimers) has had a few days of clarity and truly seems to understand the loss. Yet, she hasn't asked about the funeral - to which it would be impossible to take her. She knows her firstborn will be in Heaven to welcome her.
My sister got here safely all the way from the east coast to Austin, then driving here. I just pray for safe travel for everyone coming.

I'm so lucky to have friends all over the country from business...one just wrote this morning that after her brother died she asked him to 'drop' nickles to let her know he was there. She finds lots of nickles. Then she does something nice for his wife - and finds dimes each time.

Consider God's timing in what I've been reading! Just on Monday morning in taping my Video Email- hours before my brother died, I shared about reading and studying for the last 2 months HEAVEN and Heaven is for Real. God has prepared me for this time. But for now...I must mourn and walk through the valley of the shadow. I do so knowing I am prepared for the next life in Paradise because I believe Jesus came and died to make that possible. I pray you do as well.

Meeting Huckabee

What a night! Met Gov. Mike Huckabee in person - photo proves it! Handsome buy on the right is my dear Hubby, Charley.
He was here in Champaign, IL to raise money for a home for unwed mothers. This man is so wise, so humble, so 'Lincoln'ess'.
He is the first one in his family to even graduate from HIGH SCHOOL!
I told him I pray daily for clear guidance from God regarding if he should run for president. I pray he will! I think he will!
His message was that in the Declaration of Independence it was so novel of an idea that we were all created equal because at that time - that really didn't seem to be the case - it was more how much land you owned, or your family name....... but THAT idea, that we were created EQUAL, and endowed with unalienable rights by OUR CREATOR - gives each one of us value. And that means ANY human being - whether in the womb, or in a nursing home.
Once we determine a human's worth based upon finances or social 'interruption' - and when you get down to it, those are the 2 determining factors used to argue in favor of abortion - we have set the bar (very , very dangerously) LOW. My mother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's. Yes, it is a monetary drain. Yes, she is not 'contributing' the way some 'see' it. But she is my Mom, and God has her here for a purpose. Until HE calls her home to heaven to be with him, there is something for me to learn from her. She has rights, she is worthy of our love and our support.
THAT's the kind of president I WANT and PRAY for!
Join me in praying that Mick Huckabee run, and WIN! And reclaim our dear land for God, as it began.

Royal Wedding Commentary - Ceremony

I'm moved! because of a business engagement, I was on the road this morning - and just now, this evening, have had a chance to watch a recording of the ceremony.
HOW MOVING - HOW Beautiful! WHAT a TRIBUTE to God's sacrament of marriage between a man and a woman! YES!!!!!

I am grateful for the message of this marriage - the pomp, the ritual, the quiet beauty of not only the bride, but the ceremony and the excitement, the loyalty, the pride of the British people. Oh - for this level of respect for marriage as God ordained it in OUR land.

I know some think it is silly, but I think the attention the world has given this marriage is a testament to the God-given yearning we all have to meet the challenges of life with another: man with woman, woman with man.

I pray sincerely for the success, the blessing of children, God's guidance of this couple as they face the challenge of their roles in their country.

Onto the dress ....
Well, my guess of last post was pretty close. I wasn't surprised at all by the long lace sleeves either. Beautiful.

Equally beautiful is the dress for Pippa, her sister. I'd LOVE to see that one up close. Beautiful silhouette - absolutely beautiful.

I'd love to know the history behind the choir robes, ruffled collars on those adorable little boys, the lace ascots over top of the red soldier-looking choir members standing out front.

And the HAT! Can't help but observe that on all the one-sided ones that the 'hat', the 'fluff' is ALWAYS on the left as you look at the lady...their right side. This aligns with what I've been taught - and teach, that focal points belong on one's right - which is the left as they are seen. Because - we read left to right.

Can NOT figure out though why Queen wears a pin so high and in addition to pearls!

Quite the pleated skirt thing going on on Camilla's ensemble! She looks so austere and sad. So much of Kate and William seems so much better, more mature than the whole Charles/Diana marriage.

Wonder why the preacher guy took of that pointed hat for part of the ceremony...

Westminster Abbey! Wow!!! I don't know how old it is, but that man figured out how to build such a beautiful, arched, tall, symmetrical cathedral - only testifies to the intelligence God planted in us, His image.

I can't but think...if this is what we can accomplish here on earth - what glory it will be ours to see in heaven. My mind is all into heaven these days reading Randy Alcorn's HEAVEN, and just read last night and this evening, 'Heaven is Real' about the little 4 year old boy who obviously died and came back during surgery with many details proving he was, indeed, in heaven. What a gift - this glimpse. I highly recommend it!

And now - back to the challenges of this day - which, in our country, is coming to the aid - monetarily, in person, and in prayer for all those families so devastated with the tornadoes. May God be glorified in how we respond...

Royal Wedding Commentary-Day Before the Wedding

Day BEFORE:
DID YOU SEE THE right side hem on Kate's white ruffle front jacket hanging down on TV tonight - coverage as she arrived at the hotel?

Tell-tale quick construction in my book - depending on the lining to hold up the hem! IN my construction thinking, a hem should ALWAYS be hand stitched to the garment, and the lining hand-stitched to the hem. But hey - what do I know?

THat hanging hem just screamed to me in this 'event' where everyone is holding their breath wondering what Kate's dress will be like...

My guess?

Slim through the waist - full with gores. Probably all a beautiful lace - and with at least little cap sleeves.

If she shows up in that monster of a dress with the HUGE flower-textured skirt they just showed on Inside Edition - I'll scream!

The spot on the hats looks amazing. I'd love to go to one of those hat-makers and see the entire process!!!

Back to reality - the devastation in the south here in the USA has me in prayer for the many people and towns effected. I'm confident that God's people will be the ones to show up first and stay the longest. Telling already to hear the survivors say they are 'blessed' to have survived even though they've lost anything. Yes, all that matters is your life. The rest is just 'stuff'.

Preview on the Royal Wedding

You just have to take a minute to watch this 'preview'...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kav0FEhtLug

I'll be traveling during the big event - boo hoo, but I'm sure I'll get to see a replay of the REAL thing...

Did hear on a Christian radio station yesterday from a British commentator that Kate Middleton is a Christian...and that the church has issued a request for prayer for the couple. Even issued was a prayer for children to pray - and it starts "Dear Jesus" !! Oh - for our country to be so bold for Christ!

Challenges of Travelling and Shows!!!!!!!

Get a kleenex, cause if this saga doesn't make you cry - you'll be laughing your heads off!
IF you think traveling, vending, teaching it shows is 'glamorous' - take heed! While I still consider myself to be VERY fortunate and blessed to be doing all this..... it DOES have its challenges!

I truly believe the Lord has something for us to learn through EVERY situation, and honestly, what I think he's telling me is that I'm stronger than I think I am, and that ONLY with the great helper/friends He has brought my way could I every possibly be handling days like today.....

Puyallup show was early March. Had my 7 boxes of jackets, booth fixtures, lighting, cash register, stock, brochures, credit card machine, etc. shipped by my great helper Kathy and her hubby on Mon, March 8 directly to Tampa area - my helper here, Elaine and her hubby - in Clearwater actually. That allowed plenty of time. I sent an extra box of stock..... had some jackets with me for intense work on my NEW BOOK!

So got home from Puyallup March 8. Monday. That Thursday I flew off to Cleveland from Indianapolis (that is a 2 our drive from my home - dear son drove me)...to go tape an episode for the new PBS sewing show, It's Sew Easy. More on that later...exciting, I met and worked a bit with SUEDE - designer from season 5 of Project Runway..... It snowed there 7" or so overnight. Taped Friday morning - after which my head cold took hold of me with a vengeance. Had gotten that because I slept with the humidifier on me to make noise to balance the CPAP mask my husband has been told he has to sleep with - which keeps ME awake. That's another whole story - had a huge scare with his health in Jan and early Feb causing me to cancel the Feb. Denver Show..... So as soon as I got done taping that morning, I really start blowing my nose constantly. So - got home Saturday morning.

Made more Jacket Kits like crazy, proofed NEW BOOK, and then left again for Indi arriving on Tuesday. Also - that Monday, my helper here called to let me know that THREE of the SEVEN boxes had arrived. Not worried - figured they'd arrive on Tuesday - no sweat!

THANKS BE TO GOD ABOVE, at least those 3 boxes contained ALL my jackets, and kits from Puyallup. If those get lost, I may as well just give up an entire year of travels!!!!!!!! God is GOOD!

So - start to track the other 4 boxes, they're lost. Then appear perhaps in the area and change with UPS the delivery to be here to my hotel. Praying they arrive on set-up the booth day, Wednesday. See the UPS truck roll up - raise arms in praise - assuming they are on the truck - NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sew - nothing to do but to start to re-buy what necesssary to pull off a booth:
New cash register, print out forms for credit card purchases, new clipboards, black fabric to cover tables, screen and hooks, pvc pipe, ..... you get the idea. Go home to motel last night. Think ahead and realize my projector for Power Point programs for classes is also lost. Knew I could use the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo one - but would need a connecter to go to my Apple computer - go buy the one dear son tells me to buy - at Best Buy. Grateful thought of before class started...feeling quite smart.
Program the NEW cash register. Went well - felt very smug and smart I did it so easily - was the same type of cash register as my old one. Read that batteries needed to hold journal info for $, but no alert it held everything else also only with batteries...well found THAT out this morning.

THEN... backing out of the parking place about 9 pm finally having done everything in booth possible, CRUNCH!!! A fender bender in the parking lot, - but really not even a scratch on either car - and Elaine had NEVER had any type of mishap driving! I'm feeling so responsible and terrible... and so indebted to all their great help - I'm sure you can imagine!

Then went to eat and sat in the bar area instead of waiting and got lousy service. I mean... it took 10' at least to get a glass of nerve-calming wine I figured I needed/deserved...........

What an end to a day that started with the only thing on my list of real concern was stopping at a drugstore to get eyeliner so I had 'eyes' cause it didn't get or keep packed! At this point - I could care less if I have proper eye makeup!!!
Could I sleep? After programming the cash register - thinking it was done perfectly - then NO, I couldn't sleep!

OK - so I go to teach my class at 9. WOULD YOU BELIEVE - that the connector sold to me by Best Buy was NOT the correct one?!? No such port on my apple that fit that thingie! Thankfully I had my cell phone on me - and called Mark the superboy of this group - and he arrived about 10' into my class - getting power point up and running. Meanwhile - was 'winging' it..... Such Fun!

Get back to booth - to take over cash register I leave dear Eileen with (hasn't run cash register in about 50 years) - she'd been playing and it wasn't programmed, nothing working!!!!!!!
Long and short of it: that brand new cash register would NOT hold the tax rate in it - and most of the time - not ALL the time, mind you - it did not add the proper 7% tax. Which meant we had to hand figure/check everything. Ahhh - but what wonderful customers sewers are! Everyone so understanding, patient, etc, etc. Meanwhile, Elaine and hubby Dave and also helper Sandy who had volunteered to help out - learning as they go and picking up pieces of me everywhere it seems!

Running out of brochures, stock, already. But always excited when reception of my stylish sweatshirt jackets is positive and exciting...which it seemed to be. Keep Smiling, Londa.... Keep Smiling.............
Meanwhile blowing my running nose constantly... EAT? fat chance! Mouth dry as cotton - nasal drainage...
Keep Smiling, Londa,,,,,,

4:00 - Sandy and I leave having taken down most of the 39 jackets, to the Free Stage to do my one woman fashion show of jackets - THAT's a Sweatshirt??!!?? Half way through - the lavalier microphone stops working! Sew... OK - we'll use the hand-held mic - a bit taxing with constantly putting on and taking off jackets. I think there must have been 250 to 300 in the crowd. Great audience - I shared a bit of my 'experience' thus far - I NEEDED EMPATHY - and they were SO kind!
While I'm giving the show - my cell phone (in my bra) - starts buzzing like crazy - like yea, I'm gonna whip it out of my bra and answer!!!!!!!

Well - guess what? The dear lady in Puyallup UPS office has news that the 4 boxes have been located - and are being delivered to Elaine's house - in Clearwater! NOT what I had changed it to - so now this evening, her dear hubby Dave drove the 1.5 hours each way to go fetch the boxes. Is that a dear, wonderful, generous man or WHAT?!?

At this point - leaving it all in the Lord's most capable hands - that the cash register WORKS. That the Credit card Machine WORKS, etc......... Because you can be SURE that I marched the faulty cash register right back to Staples and got a refund.

Now my fingers are tired as well - but I feel better already and do bet I'll sleep tonight!

That's All Folks.... Stay Tuned! I'm just gonna write a list of my blessings and call myself fortunate. I mean come on - if all the people in the world (how about Japan right now!) could have 2 rolls of toilet paper, a clean bed, an air conditioned room, a computer - internet connection - how amazing would THAT be? So - please don't get me wrong, though I know I'm complaining, I DO realize and appreciate the many blessings.

Say - the events in Japan will be affecting sewers in a significant way. While I"m almost hesitant to share this - as those people's lives are SO much more important.... but already my
scissors man friend says he's gotten notification of 22% increases in prices of scissors coming from Japan (KAI among others!) and that is only the beginning! And, so much fabric is printed in Japan as well! Costs were rising before, but now - just hold on.........

I truly believe God is trying to get EVERYONE's ATTENTION! HE is in control, and when you think anything else, He'll put you and me in our proper places. That is where I pray my heart and head are tonight - in the proper place in relationship to Him!

Thanking and praising my helper friends, customers, but most of all Jesus my Lord.. and our Father above............
Good Night!

Venting....

OK - I'm venting. I'm a political beast at heart. My hubby has said many times he's relieved I'm 'occupied' with my creative sewing career! Taking a break from writing that will become the 2nd edition of my book on Creative Sweatshirt Jackets.....

1. Just toured the school where my DD is doing her student teaching. That one - along with every other one I've been in built any time in the last 10 years would make what I went to school in (and learned quite well in, thank you very much!) look like the dires of poverty! Carpet - everywhere! I mean - even in rooms where they EAT!
There is NO reason on this earth why our schools today need to be Taj Mahals!!! In fact, with all the 'stuff' everywhere in the room - it's no surprise to me that children are 'distracted' ala ADHD!
2. Politicians and federal employees across the board must learn to live by the SAME RULES as the rest of us!
Sharing from a source I trust...
"
No one has been able to explain to me why young men and women serve in the U.S. Military for 20 years, risking their lives protecting freedom, and only get 50% of their pay. While politicians hold their political positions in the safe confines of the capital, protected by these same men and women, and receive full pay retirement after serving one term. It just does not make any sense.

Checked snopes - read here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/socialsecurity/pensions.asp
I just feel they really are just like us - and if they were properly motivated, they would serve humbly instead of acting like aristocracy! They deserve the same as you and I. No better, no worse. Yes - I'm a conservative, Christian - and most of the time Republican.
35 States file lawsuit against the Federal Government
Governors of 35 states have filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.
This will take less than thirty seconds to read. If you agree, please pass it on."

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform... in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop.
If each person that receives this will forward it on to 20 people, in three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message.. This is one proposal that really should be passed around.
Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: "Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States."

Now - back to what I CAN control - my directions on creative sewing!

The Bachelor

The Bachelor.....
OK - WHY do I watch this nonsense???? I certainly don't agree with the premise - much less the morals, or the process!
Nonethelesss...I'm watching. (So is hubby!)
I know - I watch because of the CLOTHES! I love to see what these bimbos are all wearing - and decide if I think they look good in it...

BUT -
I hate, hate, hate how pathetic our English language has become...
I think I'm gonna scream if I hear one more time:

  • 'like' used over and over
and
  • 'you guys' ................... they are gals, for one thing
or
  • take our relationship to the next level...

Just venting....

PS - are those fangs on this blonde real????

Recent books I've read

The Last Jihad and The Last Days by Joel Rosenberg were thrillers based on modern day history and gave me a new insight into the middle eastern conflict. These fictional books so intersect with modern day events and issues = you'll be amazed and glued to them! I certainly was. In fact, I actually read The Last Days 2 times not even realizing it until more than half way through!!!!! That is how FULL this author packs characters and events into his works.

HIGHLY recommend!

Also - went back into history upon reading of Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington in Sarah Palin's newest book. I learned oodles about the culture of slavery in U.S. History and certainly have a newfound knowlege and respect for Booker T. Washington. His respect for and elevation of WORK - and work done well was inspiring and refreshing.

Sewing for Russell - My Grand-Dog!

OK - so I was at the fabric store looking through the pattern book to find the Simplicity Apron pattern I'd used for my daughter - as I had been requested to stitch up another one - this time with a 'top' to it - and I came across ALL these pet clothes patterns! ... This is one of 7 views in Simplicity 9520.

You seee - my DD and wonderful hubby decided to add a DOG to their family - no less than about 2 weeks after they moved into their new house no less -- so now I have a Grand Dog.
He's pretty cute though - I gotta say. He and my #1 Grandson play so cute together. So now my baby has a house, a yard, AND a dog. Very 'Lassie' plan I'd say. I just wish the world were like it was during 'Lassie' episode days and he could go out and run the neighborhood and play!

Anyway - back at the store, then... I saw this Indianapolis Colts polar fleece - so I was off and running. Russell being black, I thought that the bands would be best a blue - but could NOT find a blue ribbing or fleece that would work - so you can't see the bands around his back-end, neck, or front legs, but they are black. I also must admit, it was kinda hard to 'get the picture' of sewing for a dog. Things were quite different as far as 'pieces' go - and it tickled my brain a bit - but that's always a good thing.

The back side curves up a bit to under the tummy - but I have to agree - it needs a 'pee pee' alteration - curving that up a tad more. As it is - they'll just have to fold up the back end when he goes out to 'do his business'. I had stitched it up pretty much - to a fitting stage - to give it to them, and then ran down and finished it off all on the 31st - midst putting a big meal on the table - you get the picture. So then, when the additional 'alteration' was requested - my reply was it would just have to wait!

Sew............there you have it: the "HIT" gift of the Christmas 2010 season. Have fun - sew for your animals!!!

By the way - I stitched this up on my serger - which uses EL needles, which I handle at my website at 25% savings...both in a combo pack of 80's and 90's, or all 80's and all 90's.

SEARS and K-Mart support USA...REALLY!

I am very fortunate NOT to have anyone in my family affected by serving in the military, but I can sure support those who do by supporting companies who chose to 'Do the Right Thing'.
Just got this email and wanted to pass it along...
Londa

confirmed at: (Same applies to K-Mart which is owned by Sears)

I know I needed this reminder since Sears isn't always my first choice. Amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and they haven't withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year?

How does Sears treat its employees who are called up for military duty? By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being called up..

Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years.

I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at Sears, and be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement it well deserves.

Pass it on.

Decided to check this before I sent it forward. So I sent the following e-mail to the Sears Customer Service Department :

I received this e-mail and I would like to know if it is true. If it is, the Internet may have just become one very good source of advertisement for your company. I know I would go out of my way to buy products from Sears instead of another store for a like item, even if it's cheaper at that store.

This is their answer to my e-mail:

Dear Customer:

Thank you for contacting Sears. The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback.

Sears regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our young men and women can make. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time.

Please pass this on to all your friends. Sears needs to be recognized for this outstanding contribution and we need to show them as Americans, we do appreciate what they are doing for our military!!!

GREAT Vest on my Houston Helper

As I was going through photos from the Houston Quilt Festival, I found these of my helper, Pat, and her great vest. She made it of recycled and felted wool sweaters, vests, etc. The striped binding is even the lining of a jacket she picked up for $.50 at her local thrift shop!

Houston Creative Inspiration - 11/3/10

The inspiration we see as gals stop by our booth #717 here at the Houston Quilt Festival 'Preview' night was AWESOME!

Look at this top - on a sheer knit black base. My super dooper assistant Carol eyed this jacket and broughtd her over to me and my camera! She's sitting here with me in our motel room at 12:30 am 1 1/4" folded strips (ala Clover 3/4" wide Bias Tape Maker), then folded wrong sides together a bit less than half and stitched with white thread to the black base. Marking it would be interesting, but certainly possible: right sides together of the black base, with 2 layers of dressmaker carbon, right side out slipped inbetween.

At the top of my thumb nail, that is a folded edge, as the edge I'm holding.

An ETSY buy - this customer's fabric coiled necklace drew our attention. It was cotton, straight grain cut and folded strips, somewhat twisted here and there, but not twisted at the very center, with also just folded edges showing at the center. No stitching at all - all glued onto a base. Carol and I think trying this or a lighter weight fabric - on the bias and doing an ODD number of 'roses' would be a very inviting creative task. Gee - I can even see this done out of an old flannel plaid shirt! Chain was attached to each end to complete the necklace. She shared she thought it was still on ETSY (I'm too tired to look right now), just search there for 'coiled fabric rose necklace' and we think you'd find them.

I taught my first class yesterday - a 3 hour class on my sweatshirt jackets...starting out with my 'Frumpy to Wow' Design Principles class, then my Creative Journey program where I walked them through several jackets' design inspiration and construction. My students called it a 'sleeper' class - explaining that they loved it all and got so much more than they expected. That was great to hear - and a wonderful way to start this last show of the year for me. Their feedback also has led me to conclude that I will propose a hands-on all day class for next years' Festival. It was wonderful to have Carol in the class to help out too - and the wonderful staff in the Faculty Center are amazingly helpful and a great, safe place to keep teaching supplies.

We had a lazy start to this long day because we were lucky enough to get in quickly yesterday and got in 4 hours' work after my morning class. We finished setting up the booth from noon to 4 when the 'Preview' hours started and went til 10...!!!!

Tomorrow I'm looking forward to my Trunk Show class from 2-3 in the ballroom! Reporting more tomorrow......

Wisdom for the day

My grandson started kindergarten this year, and the first day he came home talking about a Bully being mean to him!

Heard a very good program from the archives of Dr. James Dobson's Family Talk today - can't recommend these 2 highly enough... Healing the Wounded Spirit - parts I and II.
Here is a link:
http://www.myfamilytalk.com/Broadcast/
Have any and all children of any school age listen to these!

Then also heard this while I was in the car - Forgiveness is the decision to lift the barrier and let others back into our lives. The discussion was about marriage - and how sometimes a partner will seemingly 'demand' forgiveness. Impossible - one can request forgiveness, but can't force it.

More Fall Fashion Finds - Pant Focus and Londa's How-To's

I could do these jeans - or change a less expensive pair to look like these! All I need is my Discharge Paste and a sponge brush to take away color on the thighs (But honestly, WHY would I want to make my thigh area a lighter color and attract attention there???) Now - perhaps down the inseams and the side seams - then attack the stitching with a Topstitching needle and new thread. White is pretty daring in my book though. I still prefer the Topaz Jeans Stitch Thread. I always keep it handy to do jean alteration work.

Pant legs seem to be narrow - pegged, slim..... yuck! Won't last - then you'll be back for more flattering straight and boot leg silhouettes next year - that's my prediction! Meanwhile, it does seem though that there are LOTS of pant options. In the In Style Magazine, I found ads from
Levi - new Curve ID pairs - for whatever shape your behind is in...and offered in skinny, staight and boot cut. Go to levi.com.

Then a fold-out ad from GAP caught my eye as well -0 offering black pants in slim cropped, modern boot, boy fit, true straight, really skinny and curvy options. THAT ad will get me into the store! The silhouettes were really, really well shown.

BEWARE OF SLANTED MIRRORS in the stores! Always check out the mirrors - in the show room and in the dressing room...if the lower portion stands out from the wall more than the top - the mirror is purposely placed that way to make you look - OH - at least 10 lb. thinner! Can I get glasses for everyone to do that for my body every day - ALL the time please?

Fall Fashion Finds + Londa's thoughts and How-To's

OK - I've been browsing...through Fashion Magazines and mailers that have caught my eye.
I learned from Sandra Betzina years ago to just scan through magazines looking for the common ideas - and here is what I've come up with for Fall Fashion Trends for 2010
  • Big Bulky Tops - Chunk Knits - paired with straight, slim skinny bottoms (WHO looks good in skinny bottoms, is what I wanna know - I'll keep my boot cut and straight leg pant style, thank you!) Anyway - here's some photos...
At least it seems the skiinny pants are usually black, and focus is near the face with cowls, jewelry, etc.
  • Ruffles, Ruffles, Ruffles - EVERYWHERE - from on coats to jackets to boots to purses...here's the proof - and most of the time these are circular ruffles - so you just cut circles, cut into the center, cut a smaller circle, stay stitch the inner circle edge, clip to stay stitching to make what is round be straight - and stitch them in - on - whatever. FUN!

Personally - I think the ruffle - which extends and turns into the flower on the lapel - is just too cute, but I'd put it on the other lapel, and forget the belt, and carry through the black onto the braid or topstitching on the lapel...but that's just me.

Ruffled purses are cute - but not gathering attention at MY hips, thank you! Lovely to look at - not sure about attractiveness as carried though - and last? You try - not me.

ss above The aqua teal dress above to the left appears to have circular ruffles stitched into the side seams - OK if you're skinny - otherwise - how about at the shoulder seams to create a wider shoulder therefore skinnier bottom? Do LUV that color on the red head model though!
Look closely at the plaid black and white jacket - pairing a sheer polka dot ruffle on top of what appears to be a fringed self fabric trim.

While the other photos have used ruffles right INTO the construction seams, it appears the ruffles on this purple vest are added as embellishment. For this wide and full - allow at least 3 times length it will cover, and perhaps get out the serger to finish the edges first - THEN dig out that RUFFLER gadget which, though ancient, actually works AMAZINGLY well - giving the pleated effect you see here. Note the white blouse - I Blogged on that earlier ....
    • Large face-framing collars on coats, jackets, etc..... ala my Chosen
pattern for jackets made from sweatshirts! I LOVE this white collar - and you'll see it and some different versions of it on a new pattern of mine next year!

  • Zippers Zippers Zippers!!! See them
up the edge of this double-breasted jacket and extending into the lapel - I love it! I'm personally amazed at the amount of sewing that is going into these garments! At least we can appreciate it all - and decide what makes sense to sew - and what make sense to BUY!

Can't wait to try to figure out how to take some zipper by the inch and turn it into this spectacular zipper flower necklace - below, upper right photo!

Note then too the zipper insert piping type application on the dress to the left. Personally - for most of us, I'd stick zipper piping into some flattering VERTICAL lines..... I'm fighting Blogger today - why is this underlining? onto another post for more photos and comments..... Please COMMENT - share what YOU THINK!!!

Wisdom for life from another Christian novel

I love to read - almost as much as I love to sew. Christian fiction, Christian historical fiction - both favorites of mine. Last night (1 am) I finished Though None Go With Me by Jerry B. Jenkins.
Even on my Kindle - it is possible to highlight spots to 'save' them for reference in the future - so that is what I did, and then journaled about them this morning - marking and adding notes in my Bible as well. Two places stood out to me in the novel about a very Christian woman whose life went from bad to worse and then worser yet. I won't tell the events and ruin it for you...but one thing is that her husband comes down with what is apparently Alzheimers - and this is a long time ago, before it was understood - and barely identified. The beautiful way she stands by him through many years was inspiring - and helped me understand my Dad's devotion to my mother as they go through the same experience.

The novel is full of scripture for life that the main character, Elisabeth, had committed to memory - and though most of them were familiar, I certainly can't quote chapter and verse. Computer to the rescue - all you need to do is google for the phrase in the scripture and the location in the Bible comes up!

Ephesians 2:8 - "For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." Of this, the father of Elisabeth, as written by Jerry Jenkins writes - explains: "We're saved by grace of God. Living godly is noble. But don't do it for any reason other than to thank God for the gift of grace, otherwise you're still trying to earn his favor." That's worth 'chewing on' for a spell...

Psalms 37: 3-5 "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass."
True for you? Elisabeth responds, "I don't want to understand the mysteries of heaven! I just want God to make sense one time!" Ben answers, "It's clear he does not give us whatever we desire, so either we are not truly delighting ourselves in Him or we misinterpret the phrase 'give you the desires of your heart."
Consider this possibility Ben goes on, "That the phrase, 'he will give you the desires of your heart' means that he will TELL you what the desires of your heart should BE.
In other words, delight yourself in him and he will tell you WHAT to desire. "

All that is enough for me to try to get into the marrow of my bones as I work today...I hope it is helpful for you as well.

Oh - and in googling, I find that "Though None Go With Me" is a Hallmark Channel movie with Cheryl Ladd. I've pushed that to #1 in my Netflix list...I'll let you know how 'true' to the book the movie is.

Also - regarding Jerry J. Jenkins (one of the authors of Left Behind series), some things of interest....
  • a new movie, just released... here is what Jerry states at his Blog:
Jenkins Entertainment’s latest feature film, directed by my son Dallas, is opening around the country in the next several days.

To find out if it will be showing near you, click here: http://thewhatifmovie.com/theaters-3

It’s funny, heartwarming, moving, and we feel our best effort to date. When we want to be heard politically we vote at the polls, but if we want our voices heard in Hollywood, we have to vote at the box office. That’s why I will be buying tickets to my own movie when it opens in Colorado Springs.

What If… stars Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), John Ratzenberger (Cheers, Toy Story), Debby Ryan (Suite Life on Deck), and Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Trust me, this is a picture you can bring your friends to without reservation or embarrassment. I guarantee it’s not cheesy or typical Christian movie fare.

To see a quick sample, click on the above site and then click on “Downloads” and look for the video trailers.

And here’s the best part: if What If… is not yet scheduled for your area, you can help bring it there. Again, click on the above site, then Click on “Join Our Team” and see the many ways you can help.

What If… is already getting rave reviews, and I’d love to hear from you after you’ve seen it. Most important, let’s let Hollywood know the audience for faith-based films like this is vast and eager for more.

  • and his new novel - re-written from years ago, called The Last Operative, he states...
"In the original version—and this one—I took what I considered a thoroughly innovative approach by attempting to make each speaker obvious without attributing any dialogue to anyone. Let me know whether you think it works."

Sounds neat to me. I always hate reading the 'He said", etc. when I read - especially as I read out loud to my grandson. If he's paying attention, he knows who says what - so I just leave it out. That's what I think Jerry is saying he has done in this book. It's next on my list to have mysteriously float through the air into my Kindle!
